AICRP on Wheat, AAU-ZRS, Shillongani
AICRP on Wheat and Barley started
at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat (HQ) in 1975, and shifted to RAAS, AAU, Shillongani in 1977. AAU- Zonal Research Station, Shillongani, Nagaon is a very important centre because it has been playing a major role in improvement of productivity of wheat in Assam. This is the only Wheat research station of the state as well as of the N-E Region. The project helps in area expansion of wheat in the districts of Nagaon, Morigaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Dhubri etc. as these few districts are included in the state road map of wheat. The aim of the centre is to identify and develop high yielding climate resilient varieties with proper management practices and pests and disease control in wheat crop considering the suitability for the state under All India Co-coordinated Wheat Improvement Programme. This programme also aims for increasing production as well as expansion of area of wheat in the state. The mandate of the project may be summerized as follows:
1. To study the performance of developed wheat varieties under the agro-climatic conditions.
2. To screen exotic & indigenous germplasms of wheat for resistance to pest- disease & other characters.
3. To identify and develop varieties for early maturity, drought tolerance, late sown conditions, dormancy to pre- harvest sprouting, biotic stress resistant varieties, suitability for rain fed as well as limited irrigated conditions, easily threshable & good storage capability etc.
4. To incorporate wheat in existing cropping system for sustainable agriculture.
5. To monitor pests & disease dynamics in the region & their management.
6. To develop suitable seed storage technology.
7. To increase the productivity through improved cultural & resource management.
