The main mandates of KVK:
i) To conduct On Farm Testing trials for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use systems.
ii) To organise Front Line Demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feedback information in farmers fields.
iii) To organise trainings to update the extension personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis.
iv) To organise short and long term vocational training programmes in agriculture and allied fields for the farmers and rural youth with emphasis on learning by doing for higher farm production and generating self employment opportunities to the youth.
v) To act as Knowledge Resource centre of the district.
vi) To provide quality planting materials and livestock strain in the district.

The KVK has a Counselling Centre, an ATIC unit, a model bamboo nursery under National Bamboo Mission and a Soil testing laboratory well equipped with all the soil testing equipment.

The Best Innovative Farmer Award for the year 2024 was awarded to Mr. Anjan Nath, Farmer from Sonitpur district by AAU, Jorhat. Mr. Nath has total 10 ha of cultivable land. He was initially engaged with cultivation of different season bound field crops. Gradually he started fishery with an area of 0.78 ha and introduced poultry, duckery, goatery, dairy and mushroom in his farming system. Mr. Nath was interested in farming activities but he did not have sufficient knowledge about scientific integration of different components and also, he was unaware about market linkage and value addition of the products.
KVK interventions:
Mr. Nath attended multidisciplinary training programmes organized by KVK Sonitpur time to time.
Conducted different Demonstration programme in his field and established an IFS unit.
Formed one Paddy based FPO and started seed production, value addition and market linkage of paddy, millet etc.
A custom hiring center was established through KVK under APART project.
Annual turnover: In the year 2024-25 Mr. Nath able to earned Rs 3.0 lakhs from Poultry and Duckery, 2.0 lakhs from Fishery, 2.0 lakhs from Dairy and Goatery, 0.70 lakhs from Mushroom, 1.0 lakh from Horticultural crops and 3.0 lakhs from field crops and thereby achieved a total annual turnover of Rs.1170000 till now.
Mr. Ashit Rajbanshi has 4 bigha of cultivable land. He was initially engaged with Aquarium business since 1996. Gradually he started flower cultivation in 2000. Mr. Rajbanshi was interested in commercial floriculture but he did not have sufficient knowledge about scientific methods of flower cultivation.
KVK interventions:
Mr. Rajbanshi approached KVK, Sonitpur for technical support and financial assistance
KVK, Sonitpur conducted different demonstration programme in his field on commercial cultivation of summer marigold var, Seracole, Chrysanthemum, Dutch rose, Black centered Gerbera etc.
Conducted vocational training programme in his farm to engage more people with flower cultivation.
Annual turnover: In the year 2024-25 Mr. Rajbangshi able to earned Rs 24 lakhs from flower business and out of which 9 lakhs is solely from the farm.
KVK, Sonitpur promoting natural farming since 2022 funded by ICAR-ATARI (Zone VI), Guwahati.Till date, 28 nos. of awareness camp, 13 nos. of training, 2 exposure visits,8 demonstration(on and off campus), 1 OFT have conducted under NF.
District champion farmer training was also conducted at KVK, Sonitpur.
In KVK farm we have established 3 demonstration units namely Five layer fruit model, Rice based cropping system model, Arecanut based multi-storied cropping model under natural farming.
Two numbers of villages namely Bogijuli and Seunichuk have adopted by KVK. In village Seunichuk 70 % farmers practicing organic farming have adopted NF practices successfully under bari system. Farmer Anjan Nath of Seunichuk village received Best Innovative farmer award during Regional Agricultural Fair, 2025 at AAU, Jorhat for NF.
The first assamese book on NF was published by KVK, Sonitpur inagurated by Hon’ble Agriculture Minister of Assam Sri Atul Bora, at AAU, Jorhat.
Success story of a NF progressive farmer of Sonitpur district Mrs. Deepali Mandal has published in International Journal of Biochemistry research.
