Dr K. M. Bujarbaruah, a 1977 batch of ARS (Agricultural Research Service) worked in various capacities from Scientist, Sr. Scientist, Principal Scientist, Joint Director, ICAR Complex, Nagaland centre; Director of National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland; Officer-on-Special Duty for NRC on Pig, Guwahati, Assam; Director of ICAR Research Complex for Northeastern Hill Region, Barapani, Meghalaya and Dy. Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR , New Delhi, before taken over the earlier assignment as Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University. Dr. Bujarbaruah also worked as National Facilitator (Livestock and Fisheries), Sectoral Director of Jai Vigyan Project and Zonal Leader for ITK project of World Bank funded National Agricultural Technology Project as well as the country CoOrdinator for FAO for Animal Genetic Resource Conservation and utilisation.
During his service period, Dr Bujarbaruah developed six models of Intensive Integrated Farming Systems, a pig variety, pig housing models for hill areas, popularized AI in pig and Mithuns, introduced rabbits for the first time in the region for meat, furskin and wool besides facilitating the release of 6 rice, 3 tomato and 1 turmeric varieties for North Eastern Region. He also strengthened molecular research in both plant and animal in the region, collected and conserved rice germplasm in National Gene Bank and built research institutions and farms from scratch. Known for his scientific and administrative acumen, Dr. Bujarbaruah was the one to transfer the Agricultural Technologies to the farming community throughout North Eastern Region including Sikkim in a bid to make the Region food sufficient. He established for the first time an e-village in Meghalaya for agriculture related information percolation to farmers. Dr. Bujarbaruah has also distinguished himself as the crusader of organic farming in NE region where he arranged first ever International Conference on Organic Farming in 2004.
Dr. Bujarbaruah is the author of 162 research papers published in peer review national and International journals, 22 research/ technical bulletins, 4 books and contributed chapters to a number of books besides writing a number of scientific reports, vision documents and presenting both research and strategy papers in various National and International fora. He was also the member of various important committees at National and Regional level.
As Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Dr. Bujarbaruah framed Animal Science Research agenda for the country for XI Plan which are being executed through 19 Animal Science Institutes of ICAR scattered throughout the country. He also supervised 7 All India Co-ordinated programmes and 7 Network program being operated through Agricultural Universities and ICAR institutes. Dr. Bujarbaruah was also involved in developing bi-lateral programs with different countries in the area of animal sciences.
As Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Dr Bujarbaruah established 3 new colleges, rebuilt 4 old colleges, established a Number of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), established DBT-AAU centres, Agri-Incubation centre, increased the number of research projects from a mere 55 numbers to 252 numbers that led to development/ screening of around 55 different crop and animal varieties, introduced e-learning process, digitized library services, arranged overseas exposure and training of students and faculties, created superb ambience including International hostel, outdoor stadium etc. facilities that attracted students from 7 different countries to study in the University, introduced special scholarship to economically poor students, recruited fresh Faculty and staff after a gap of 20 years etc which positioned the University as one of the best in the country as would be evidenced from its bagging the prestigious and highest award of ICAR, Sardar Patel Outstndind University Award. The University also got included as one among the top 100 institutions of the country as per the ranking of Career-360 group of magazine.
For his meritorious works, Dr. Bujarbaruah was awarded Doctor of Science (DSc) award by Odissa University of Agricultural Science and Technology; Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed Award; Distinguished Veterinarian Award and Life Time Achievement Award to a serving employee. He also received Food for Future Award from Balipara Foundation; Krishak Ratna Award from The Pathar Parisalana Samity of Assam; Harit Ratna and Best Vice Chancellor Award from AAISA, ICAR; Agricultural Research Leadership of the country Award from Agriculture Today group of magazine; Dr C R Sane Award from Maharashtra Animal Science & Fishery University; Dr N N Dastur Award from National Dairy research Institute, Karnal etc. The team under his guidance received Basant Rao Naik award; Best Annual Report award of ICAR and two more Fakaruddin Ali Ahmed Awards. Dr. Bujarbaruah has guided six Ph.D., two M.V.Sc and one M.Sc. level students.
In recognition to his scientific contribution, Dr. Bujarbaruah has been taken as Fellows of prestigious scientific academies like:
Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FNAAS);
Fellow of National Academy of Veterinary Science (FNAVS).
Besides being chairman of Research Advisory Committees of ICAR, Dr. Bujarbaruah also served as member of Research Advisory Committees of Deemed to be Universities of IVRI and NDRI, Member Board of Management of Agricultural Universities, Special invitees to Governing Body of ICAR and many such important committees. On invitation, Dr. Bujarbaruah participated in conference/collaborative program development organized at France, Canada, New Zealand, USA, Italy, Philippines, Thailand, Australia, UK, Greece, Mexico, China, Bangladesh, Nepal etc.
